Higher Order Learning – What Goes Into Designing the Future of Education

When we think of higher order thinking amongst students/learners, the following words come to our mind: Curiosity, Ideation, creativity, design thinking, innovation, et all.

While one can find the classical definitions of the above words, they are mostly attributes to a person’s mindset, social consciousness, an enabled environment and the immediate ecosystem. Our education systems run to a timetable and books, which are basic requirements, and rightly so. Mostly, our education system is designed towards producing excellent professionals, successful careers, high academic accomplishments. Hence we have not seen as many inventions, breakthrough research findings.

However, our country has seen a big growth in entrepreneurship, new business ides and models. The sincere hope is that the startup buzz, growth in entrepreneurship, and being able to create jobs etc., will be sustainable. This is the time for us to find inspiration: inspiring stories, inspiring personalities, etc., to get away from the monotony and regimentation, and to step into ideation, innovation and research. Only If we can collectively implement these principles, specially during these challenging times, we can bring in a real change!
